Anthem Integrated 1 Amplifier

June 1996 Volume 3 Issue 5

This $1,295 25wpc integrated amp is designed and manufactured by Sonic Frontiers - those big hitters who evolved from a high-quality parts supplier. These guys really do a great job of packing their tubes. Each tube, in its own box, is nestled in a foam cut-out. They even include a pair of cotton gloves for installation, so you don't get skin oil on the glass.

Although the Integrated 1 is a "black box" design (you can get it in silver, too), it has a sculptured look. Naturally, the designers have used high-quality parts throughout. (What's the point of being a parts supplier if you don't take advantage of what you carry?) By the way, they offer an optional phono stage. On with the tunes.

Trittico (Dallas Wind Symphony/Fennel - Reference Recordings RR-52 LP & CD) led the way, sounding a touch soft. There was a softening of the highs, despite minimal loss of information. The brass and percussion were good indicators of this effect, showing a slight loss of bite and impact. Harmonic resonances of upper octave notes seemed to be overly rich, which tended to obscure transient detail. However, this very same richness added an ethereal bloom to images. Go figure!

Big Band Basie (Clark Terry & Frank Wess - Reference Recordings RR-63 LP & CD) presented a slight touch of slowness on the transient edge of some notes. Most noticeable was the response of the snare drum, which was a tad muddied. Overall, the leading edges of transients were somewhat muted. Don't get me wrong - the Anthem did an even-handed and admirable job with aspects of transient response. It just seemed to lose some pizzazz. Its low-level resolving capabilities were superb. This, combined with its ability to reproduce delicate timbral shading so very well, brought back some of the musical nature initially lost by the softened transient attacks.

Large-scale dynamics were also quite good, while the rhythm and pace kept the music together. Microdynamics lacked subtlety, inhibiting an ease of emotional involvement. The harmonics were well placed with respect to their fundamentals, providing an overall effect of well-placed images, despite a slight narrowing to the soundstage. Still, the soundstage had good depth and depth delineation. These effects were well illustrated with rock music, as on Nirvana's Unplugged In New York (DGC 24727, LP; DGCD 24727, CD). This more-or-less acoustic jam session came across as a small venue, yet the emotional impact left me feeling distant. Yeah, excitement was still there, but the other emotions weren't getting as involved as they should've.

The Anthem Integrated 1 does a very good job for a push-pull vacuum-tube amp. If you want some flexibility, just solder or clip a pair of jumpers between the preamp and amp, and the Anthem can be used as a preamp or a power amp separately. I suppose it's a nice option, should you find yourself in need of more power. This is such a good integrated amp, though, that I'd hate to lose the synergy for the sake of power. And don't let the rated specs scare you off. I can't say that the Anthem is powerful enough for any speaker, but it drove my Martin-Logan CLS - and that's something!

Encore The Anthem Integrated 1 is ideal for a bright-sounding system, and can alleviate the pains of digital. Check it out with your own gear - and your ears. That'll put you in the Winner's Circle!
